The center Stitch of each butterfly is placed in holding position and collects tuck stitches. The stitch on each side of center stitch is transferred to the rib bed needles (or hand knitting needle, large safety pin, hand knitting stitch holders, anything to keep the stitch) to place floats onto knit side of fabric. According to the chart below, alternately form "butterflies" on group A and B needles from 1 row to the next. Note that there is one needle between A & B groups, which always knit plain stitches. Raise the rib bed to the first dropped position (about one inch below main bed). *Transfer stitches 1 & 3 of each group A to rib bed to be held; these needles will not knit. Put needle 2 of each group into holding position and set main bed carriage to hold needles in holding position. Knit 4 rows and return stitches from the rib bed to the main bed. Set the carriage to knit needles in holding position and knit 2 rows.* Repeat from * to * with group B needles. A larger version can be knit with 2 stitches on either side of the center stitch transferred to rib bed.
