Well, I was being nostalgic today. I remember when we had adopted Starbuck. He was the worst dog I have ever had. I was so glad when we got rid of him. After that, I figured I had had enough with dogs. But of course, it wasn’t even a year later that I found myself visiting the pound. I went in there just to see what kind of dogs they had. All the dogs came running to the front of their kennels barking and wagging their tails. Except Sheba. She sat there facing the corner hanging her head and sulking. So, she’s the one I asked to see. She ran to me right away when the man took her out. She was so cute, but when he put her back, she went into the corner again and faced it with her back to the front. She did glance back at me before I left. The next day, I had to go and get her. She was such a tiny cute black and white fur ball. As soon as I went in there, she turned and saw me and this time came to the front of the cage, as if she knew I came to get her. She was so tiny, I used to carry her all over the place with her balanced on one arm.

Do you remember how I went driving all over looking for a male partner for her? That was funny. She had three litters. The first time she had three pups. The second time it was four and the last time she had five pups. Can you make out the five plus Sheba’s head in this picture? They were always so easy to give away. Usually we had way too many phone calls asking to adopt one of them. She was a good mother.

She loved to play with us. She would chase the ball and she always tried to catch a soccer ball with her arms. She would play with anything. Even in the winter, she loved to run after Uri and Rena when you guys were sliding down the hills. She loved to catch snowballs too.

All summer long she would practically live in the water. She made it her mission to take all the stones out of the lake. She would not hesitate to jump in off the dock when you two went swimming. She was always right there with us. We have to admit she made a good companion.

I guess she wasn't too thrilled when we brought Typhoon home. He was just too big for her. But he loved her and always thought of her as his Mother. He would always let her lead when we went out and even lately, he would keep Piper away from her and protect her food when she didn't eat. Typhoon was never mean to her and always respected her. Even when he was a pup, he would never eat her food and when she would go after his, he wouldn't say anything. But he does tell Piper to leave his stuff alone.

Sheba always tried to be best friends with Uri and Rena. She was interested in anything that was going on and loved going for a drive or a walk.

Rena, remember how hard and funny it was to get all of them together for the group picture?

We never knew when Sheba was born. So we gave her Valentine's day of 1984 as her birthday. It may have even been a bit earlier. But that was a good day to call her birthday.

Sheba passed away, October 14, 1999 at 6 p.m. with the assistance of her vet. We'll always remember her.
