Slippers can be very easy to knit on a machine. This pattern is specifically for the chunky 260 Brother with punch cards. Ladies size 8 slipper Insert card #1 and lock it. Using a Bernat yarn and tension 5, cast on 21 stitches to the left and 22 stitches to the right. Knit one row of stockinette. On the next row of stockinette, set the carriage to the KC button for knitting with a card. Knit that row to select your needles. (You should have both end needles in the lower position.) Then push in both buttons to give a slip stitch. Knit 8 rows this way. You will notice that only every other stitch is being knitted and the knitting is not moving down but knitting a "pocket". Set your carriage back to knit and do 2 rows of stockinette again, using the second row as the 'set' row for the needle selection. Knit another 8 rows of slip. Continue until you have repeated this sequence 15 times. End with 2 rows of stockinette at row 152 ( note: the second row does not need to 'set' your needles this time). Cast off. Sew the toe end pulling tight to bunch it up. Sew 1/3 to 1/2 for the top of the foot. Sew the heel. A rib can be added before the heel is sewn. Place the slipper back on the machine and set it up for ribbing. Rib as high as you prefer and cast off. Sew heel and back of rib. To make a slipper for another size, you will have to swatch to see how many more or less stitches you will need. If your yarn is thin, you may want to knit more than 8 rows of slip. If the foot is wide, you may need to knit more than the 15 rows. Keep it an un-even number though so that your slipper center point is one of these puffy rows...it will be more comfortable. If you are making a slipper for a child, you will need to knit fewer rows and use fewer stitches. Play around with trial and error. It doesn't take long to knit these and they are easy to unravel if you need it larger or wider. Make your favourite tassel and attach it to the top, or sew on a large pretty button.
