Knit a Teddy Bear! Help the children affected by the Tsunami! These are for the Teddies For Tragedies Project. Doctors who treat children in Third World countries are asking for these bears as they have found that children who have their own Teddies to cuddle in their cots get better quicker than those who don't have one! Each child keeps their own Teddy and can take it home, so doctors need a continual supply! Check the link and find out more about this project! On that site, you can also find hand knitting and crocheting patterns. If you wish to make these simple Teddies and donate them to this worthy cause, you can send them to Gwen Smith and you can find her address on this page. Thanks for helping the children! They are very simple to make on a knitting machine and can be stuffed with any chopped clean fabric or quilt batting. Please do not use Foam Rubber as children tend to chew them! InstructionsThese instructions are for a Brother 260 Chunky machine. Check down below for a standard gauge machine instructions. I used Bernat Hobby Craft cotton yarn - You need at least 3 different colors. One for the body, one for the pants and one for the top. The finished bear should be about 10 inches in height. Alter the number of rows if your machine is making it too big. T=5 Cast on 10 stitches with the body color. Knit 8 rows. Change to the pant color and knit 20 rows. Remove onto a garter bar or with waste yarn. Knit another leg the same way as above, then add the first leg to the needle bed beside the other leg. Knit across all 20 stitches and work for another 12 rows. Change to your top color. Knit 14 rows. Now change back to your body color and knit the head. Knit 30 rows. Change to your top color and knit 14 rows. Change to your pants color and knit 12 rows. Put the left side of 10 stitches on hold. Knit the leg on the right for 20 rows. Change to body color and knit 8 rows. Knit your last row with T+3 to do a chain link cast off. Or you can cast off with waste yarn. Now you put the left leg into work and knit 20 rows. Change to body color and knit 8 rows. Cast off as you did with the right leg.
You should have a piece knitted that looks like the above drawing. It's quite simple. Sew the sides of the head together. The head will be the center orange piece. Then you can pick up 6 stitches on either side of the top (purple part) for a total of 12 stitches. This will be the arm. Make sure you have the Teddy with right side away from you when you pick up the stitches. With the top color, knit 14 rows. Change to the body color and knit 6 rows. Pick up the 12 stitches on the other side of the body and knit the same 14 and 6 rows to complete the other arm. Using black yarn, embroider in the eyes, nose and mouth of the Teddy Bear. Sew up the Teddy bear, leaving the crotch area open. Stuff the head and then weave a yarn around the neck to be able to pull it tightly to draw in for a neck. Stuff the remaining body and sew up the crotch. Sew the corners of the head to form ears. Knit a scarf by casting on 70 stitches with one of your colors. Knit one row and change to another contrasting color and knit two rows. Change back to your first color and knit one row with the last row knit at T+3 to chain cast off. You can also knit the scarf in one solid contrasting color. Tie the scarf on to your Teddy Bear! They also ask that you supply a bag for the Teddy Bear. These bags should be sewn to be about 6.5 inches by 12 inches with a simple draw string at the top. You can get more information by checking the Teddies for Tragedies pattern page. Hope all goes well with Teddy. A little baby is waiting for one. A doctor in Sudan said....."they did more good to many of the children than the medicines!"
